“I can’t understand when you talk in Spanish! Speak English!” Billy sputtered in frustration to Jose.

“I am speaking English! You’re not hearing me!” retorted Jose.

“Wait! It is like the accents our teacher told us about at school today. My accent is Spanish, but my words are English,” continued Jose.

“You know,” Billy said, a thought dawning, “when you talk fast, it sounds like Spanish to me!”

“I’ll try to talk slower. You try harder to hear my words,” Jose laughed, stringing out his words.

“Friends don’t give up,” was their earnest cry as they raced towards the playground.
