Sheriff Tom Grady eyeballed the prisoner in his cell. Sam Calloway had shot land baron Elijah Briggs with six witnesses. “You killed him in cold blood.”

Sam’s lips twitched. “It ain’t legitimate. Don’t you wonder why there’s no body?”

Tom stiffened. No one had found the corpse. Just a bloodstain in the dirt.

At Briggs’s ranch, the sheriff found Briggs alive — bound and gagged. Briggs had faked his death with the help of his men to frame Sam and steal his land.

The angry sheriff snarled, “You faked your own murder, Briggs.”

Briggs spat. “You can’t touch me, Grady. You got no proof.”

“I got the man you tried to frame and you without a bullet hole.”

Grady arrested Briggs, and the trial was swift. Briggs was sentenced to 12 years but escaped during a prison transfer. It…
