Roland gazed eastward, waiting for the sun to peek over the horizon. His job was to herald its rising and proudly he puffed out his chest at having such a role.

As the first golden rays appeared, Roland inhaled deeply and threw his head back … but no words emanated from his throat … just silence where a loud majestic “cock-a-doodle-doooooooo” was supposed to be.

He tried again — not a sound. How ego shattering for the top cock in the fowl yard. He hung his head limply and hoped he could manage to announce the sun setting.
