Drabble #329 — Bottle
A Drabble is a work of fiction that is exactly 100 words. No more. No less.
The word of the day is BOTTLE. Today’s drabble is a drabble and a half.
Nobody ever said the answer to all your problems lived at the bottom of the bottle, but that didn’t stop her from looking.
It started innocuously enough. That universal teenage curiosity — things you know you’re not supposed to want, but want nonetheless. Not quite old enough to know what you’re doing, but cocksure enough to believe that you do.
The first beer they stole out of the fridge had been plenty. They’d giggled in her bathroom, sitting in the bathtub, heads lolling dramatically.
They’d progressed to a full 6-pack, tossing the empty bottles into the woods at the back of the house. Things were simpler before they’d aroused suspicion, before they’d learned to replace the Bacardi with equal parts water.
But after 30 years, the impulse to drown out the noise for just one more night has grown so much louder.
When is just one more finally too many?
