My phone doesn’t ring these days; it buzzes with vibration — like the cicada I found three nights ago when my husband was away. I had to crawl under the bed with an empty plastic takeaway carton to catch it.

When I hear the buzzing in my sleep, I think that the Cicada has returned. Except this time, it really is my phone.

I answer.

“A car is waiting for you outside your house. Get inside.”

My husband rolls over and with a stale wave of breath, he says, “Everything okay?”

“Shh, go back to sleep.”

But he’s already snoring. That light rattle will become a deep rumble, like the engine of a boat a long time on the water.

I get home late morning. On the hot porch, where the sun shines directly, I rummage for my key. The cicadas are screaming in the garden, a cacophony that…
