“As a matter of fact,” Carole whispered, “the lobby is this seedy seaside hotel’s best feature.”

“You don’t say,” Greta replied.

“I’m in town for my mother’s funeral,” Carole continued. “You’d think with their wealth, Dad could have put me up in something more suitable.”

“I’m sorry for your loss.”

“I’m not. Mom was a nasty woman who cared more about her rabbits than her children. That’s all she ever talked about.”

“Did you talk to her often?”

“Never. She left our family when I was ten and never looked back. It was clear she was more than splitting hares.”
