Marjorie Bell weighed 600 pounds and hadn’t left her second-floor bedroom in years.

When the dam burst, the banks of the river’s water swallowed the streets below. Sirens wailed. Rescue boats floated by, but when they saw Marjorie, they froze. No stretcher could lift her. No ladder could hold her.

Inside, the house smelled like wet carpet, sweat, and fear. Her grandchildren came in one by one to whisper tearful goodbyes after rescuers ordered them out.

“I’m not afraid. God has a plan,” Marjorie proclaimed, though her fear was apparent.

A rumbling noise shook the building as the water splashed onto the second-floor landing, and a military helicopter hovered overhead.

“Are you ready, ma’am?” a lady in fatigues shouted, rappelling down like a movie hero.
