Today’s random word is desire, with a first sentence twist of “The road ahead was closed”

This rhyming story tapped me on the shoulder today — hope you enjoy reading these one hundred words as much as I enjoyed writing them!

The road ahead was closed,
but my father didn’t stop.
He rode around the barricade
and saluted at the cop.

The mem-ry’s awful clear,
though I was just a kid,
wedged tightly before him;
my butt daren’t even skid.

My arms squeezing treasure
that would set us up for life,
hellbent on our freedom dream,
and banishing our strife.

The horse blew hard. That demon knew
it was our heart’s desire
to forswear this tangled mess
and find my daddy’s buyer.

We shook those coppers off,
sold the diamond rings,
but riches don’t match the joy
sharing stories brings.
