On the Edge of A Forest

It was a cold night. The air was fresh, but a thousand scents pulled at my nostrils. I shivered in my blanket, fighting to keep warm.

Every so often a car rumbled past, dazzling me with headlights. Nigel didn’t return. His scent was on the blanket, infused with his tears. Why did he leave me? No food, just a blanket and a tearful kiss on the head.

Forlornly, I watched another set of tail lights grow distant.

I’d somehow started to doze when one of the cars stopped. Two figures stepped out. One was taller than Nigel, the other much shorter. The short one ran to me, squealing. Her scent told me she was female, a human pup, and both worried and overjoyed.

She scooped me up and hugged me close. I was still shivering, and she held me tight. The one bigger than Nigel was talking in a sad voice, but I could feel the determination of the human pup in the tension of her muscles.

Eventually, they bundled me into the car and took me to a new place. I like it here. The human pup loves me.

She won’t leave me on the edge of a forest.
