On the Twelfth Night
You can’t always get what you want
This 100-word fictional story, a drabble, responds to the Twisted August Random Drabble 229 challenge. The random word is melt, and the twist requires incorporating it into an acrostic poem.
Every evening, Asahi walked the temple grounds until closing. On the twelfth night, passing by the donation bucket, he thought, “That must be one million yen.”
Before the gates closed, he snuck into the woods. As the sun set, he lay back on a bed of moss.
Men who shun the light of day
Electric streetlights, too
Lack no desire to veil themselves
To purloin others’ treasures
Before dawn, Asahi arose, stretched, and smiled.
He tiptoed to the bucket. Finding it empty, he shrieked.
Suddenly, temple guards swarmed him.
Asahi languished for twelve days in his dank, dark jail cell.
The Japanese man’s name, Asahi, means morning sun or dawn. At today’s exchange rate of 148.52 Japanese yen to 1.00 US dollar, 1,000,000 yen is worth $6,733.10 US.
