The rain stopped the moment I stepped outside. It had rained for hours, and I thought it was an excellent opportunity to go into the desert to find a few weird-shaped cacti to sell at my store, Rick’s Rare Botanicals.

I staggered under the Nevada sun. I was lost, dehydrated, and near death. When I came to, a cool drip touched my lips. I opened my mouth. Water. Life. Salvation.

I awoke in the shade of a cactus, shaped like a curling fist. I dug it up and took it home. “You saved my life. I’ll call you Aubrey III.”

The next day, a customer said, “I’ll give you $1,000 for it.”

I laughed. “It’s not for sale.”

Steve came back daily, offering more money. Finally, one night, he broke in to steal it.

Morning revealed only his clothes and a blood-smeared pot. Aubrey looked bigger.
