A drabble is a work of fiction that is exactly 100 words, no more, no less. I hope you enjoy it. Please scroll and read for at least 30 seconds. Claps, highlights, and comments are optional but very appreciated.

It was another sweltering clean-up day in the Greenwood District, with no time to celebrate Juneteenth in 1921.

After burying many of their neighbors and their business destroyed, Jim’s *BIPOC family had survived the Black Wall Street Massacre but were considering moving further west.

As they sifted through the rubble, Jim unearthed a metal box. Inside, they found a deed to a plot of land in Bakersfield, California and the promise of a better life.

The land had been left to him by his former slave uncle. Their hearts sparked new hope — freedom and a fresh start awaited them.

Although Juneteenth didn’t become a Federal Holiday until 2021, it has been celebrated among *BIPOC, Black Indigenous People of Color since 1866.

For this drabble, the random word to build the story around is “promise.”
