A drabble is a work of fiction that is exactly 100 words. No more. No less. However, today I’m publishing a short nonfiction piece instead.

Today is Drabble Challenge #281. The random drabble theme is “heartfelt, heart-centered, and what heart means to you.

Screams. Sobs. Breakdowns.

And sometimes, when I had nothing left inside of me, silence.

You were there. You were always there.

You sat with me as I cried. You heard my screams of frustration when I felt helpless. You let me vent, then helped me brainstorm solutions.

Thanks to you, I was never alone when life got crazy. I appreciate — and miss — your kind heart. We grew into better people together, but something changed.

There was no blowup, no final goodbye. We drifted apart, two boats sailing different seas.

“I’ll never forget you,” you promised. I wonder if that’s true.

Shoutout to Nancy Oglesby and Fiction Shorts for this fun daily challenge!
