The Biggest Fear
Model is today’s random word.
Drabble and half is the genre.
Chase hates the thought of disappointing his parents. They think he’s a model student. His teachers praise him; his test scores are high.
He knows his parents are proud of him for graduating with honors and earning a scholarship.
Yesterday his mom ordered bedding for the extra-long twin bed in the dorm. He wanted to say something, to tell her he hated the idea of going to university, of taking another class, but he couldn’t.
At dinner, he gathers his courage. His heart is racing. “Mom, Dad, I have something to tell you.”
They stop eating.
“I don’t want to go to university. I’m sorry to disappoint you, but I can’t do it.”
“And you think that’ll disappoint us?” his mom asks.
“We’re not disappointed,” his dad says. “Do you know what you want to do? How can we help?”
Why didn’t I talk to them earlier? Chase wonders.
