I was following the scent of lavender, sharp, and pungent, and unavoidable.
She was here again, that much was clear. If nothing else, because the dog was uneasy. He always knew the color of the day, despite his blindness.
He’d lived with her too, after all.
I braced my emotions, repeated my mantras, erected walls against the familiar onslaught of criticism veiled as care.
“Mom… hi.” My arms reached out, traitorous. The petaled fragrance engulfed me as my determination crumbled, too hungry for defenses.
Twenty seconds in, and I’d already reneged on the pact I’d made with my inner child.
