The carolers sing, “Be merry and bright,” but not in our universe, not tonight. It’s a fact in which we cannot delight. He’s happy early, but his anger the bottle will ignite.

The turkey is dressed, a feast to share. But he won’t eat — the bottle is his only care.

For us, the holiday will turn to dread. He’ll soon explode, cursing, calling names, and making threats. We’ll silently wish he were dead.

Every family has one, I’m sure… an alcoholic or an addict. The holiday might be white, but it won’t be right… and to all, a good night.
