My brother and I did the crossword puzzle in pen over black coffee and cigarettes. We had a standing bet. One dollar to whoever finished first.

He usually won, but occasionally, I would spin the ashtray, and he would pick up my Kool menthol, inhale, and start choking.

He’s been gone for ten years, but I still think of him whenever I do the crossword.

Today’s crossword came in the mail, not from the paper.

1 Across: “Where your mother died.”
Answer: “Attic.”

4 Down: “The secret she kept.”
Answer: “Murder.”

Who knew these things? The clues grew darker. More personal. More accurate.

13 Across: “Your first betrayal.”
Answer: “Eli.”
