Sir Aldric rode into the square, his armor shining in the sun.

Lysander, the wily wizard and Aldric’s BFF, looked less beguiling on the guillotine.

“Magic is treason,” King Cedric declared. “Execute him.”

Aldric unsheathed his sword. “Sorry, my King, I cannot allow this injustice.” Gasps rippled through the crowd.

The guards charged. Aldric fought boldly, cutting a path to Lysander. But as he cut the ropes, the wizard’s eyes sparkled, and his magic surged. “Thank you, dear brother, the throne is mine.”

Aldric staggered. The betrayal burned deeper than any blade.

The new king’s pennant rose in the square.
