Three months earlier, she was a soldier, a member of her brother’s army. Others’ orders influenced her decisions.

Her strength and dedication had never been in question. All she needed was instruction, and she would gallop, sword raised high, battle cry curling out of her lips towards the enemies of her people.

As queen, her shoulders threatened to sag under the new weight piled on them. But she called on the lessons she had learned in the years of facing death as she confronted her enemies.

Courage is not the absence of anxiety; it is action in spite of it.

Glossary

Queen Amina of Zazzau was the first woman to become the Sarauniya (queen) in a male-dominated society during her reign between 1576 to 1610. Three months after being crowned queen, Amina waged a 34-year campaign against her neighbors.
