It was a dreary night, with a light, misty rain.
I began daydreaming about how lovely it would be should the rain turn into all-night showers, watering my parched garden and the farmers’ fields. It had been such a dry summer.
As happens with a wandering mind, my focus shifted from the road to the gardens along the street on which I drove. Where once bodacious dahlias, blushing roses, and electric coreopsis flaunted their beauty as if belles at the Prince’s Ball, there were only dusty blooms and gray, withered leaves.
It was at that moment little Jeremy Corcoran, rusty red tousled hair, a blue button-collar shirt, and navy shorts, waving a flag, ran into the road. I never saw him coming.
My debt is heavy… not easily carried. I’ve not been able to set it down.
Maybe it will carry me to the bottom of the sea.
