Dr Friederiksson punched in the date again on the keypad. The machine shuddered then settled into a low hum. She unbuckled the harness and unlatched the door. Just like every other time, she had arrived at the exact moment in history that she had intended. If she could prevent the events about to unfold, she could change the course of history forever.

But again, as before, she failed. It was as though time knew her plans and resisted. Unrelenting, it could not — would not — be changed. She had almost managed but was beginning to think history didn’t want to change.
