While playing a bit part in Back to the Future II, without permission eight-year-old Elijah Wood pressed the flashing buttons on the DeLorean’s console. “Heavy,” he giggled, mimicking Marty McFly. The car sputtered, sparked, and vanished.

When the time machine reappeared, Elijah tumbled onto a misty green field in New Zealand. A man with a bushy beard and clipboard blinked at him.

“You’re not supposed to be here,” said Peter Jackson, narrowing his eyes. “Who are you?”

“Elijah Wood. I was in an arcade in a movie with Michael J. Fox. I was trying the buttons in that cool car, and now I’m here.”

Later, during auditions for The Lord of the Rings, Elijah — now eighteen — walked into the casting room. Peter wondered where he had seen the kid before… Maybe, it was déjà vu.
