Amala promised her grandmother. She would go to school every day and stay out of trouble.
Her grades were so much better since she started hanging out less with her old gang.
They were supposed to be friends, but they never seemed happy to see her succeed.
It took her a while to realise that they were envious.
Everyone recognised that Amala had brains.
She was going places.
Her teachers encouraged her, and she was doing well.
She just had to stay out of trouble.
“Amala, put this in your locker for me, quick.”
She hesitated, then took the gun.
