The furniture in the waiting room was garish orange vinyl.

I sat without moving, eyes closed.

Time stood still.

The physician sitting in the chair next to me, was finding it difficult to maintain her composure. No spoonfuls of hope were left in her arsenal.

I sat without moving, eyes closed.

In my mind, I saw the cactus Jesse gave me for Christmas, stripped of its life force, lying on an orange vinyl chair — the oddest thing.

Time stood still.

God, please let me go back.

Just two hours…

A sleepover.

An unlocked firearm.

My boy.

Why didn’t I ask?

Please, please, please always ask if there are unsecured firearms in a house where your child will spend time.

Eva MacInnes wrote a brilliant dialogue here!
