When Emily Carter inherited her grandmother Margaret’s old hope chest, she expected family heirlooms or collectibles. Instead, she found stacks of unopened letters, all addressed to Lionel Lawson.

The name was unfamiliar, yet each envelope bore her grandmother’s delicate handwriting.

Curious, Emily began looking for the man who had once lived at 77 Maple Street in Salt Lake City, Utah. It was less than 100 miles away and she figured using one of her vacation days from work would be enough.

He was no longer at that address, but the lady there said he was in the Salt Lake assisted living center.

He was frail, his hands trembling as he read her letters.

“I wrote to her every day,” he whispered. “She never wrote back.”

Emily frowned. “But she did.”
