FICTION | DRABBLE | SHORT STORY
We Should Have Visited the Mansion
This wasn’t how we wanted the day to go
A drabble is a work of fiction that is exactly 100 words. No more. No less. However, this is a drabble and a half, which means it’s 150 words.
Today’s story is for Twisted September Drabble Challenge #271 (I’m playing catch-up — it’s been a crazy month, but I’m back!). The random drabble word is egg, and you must write exactly 150 words.
Sunlight danced across the dashboard as I drove carefully through tree-lined backroads. It was a gorgeous fall day, and my son and I were enjoying the view.
My son had tests scheduled far from home in a city we hadn’t visited in years. The drive was long, and so was his appointment. After 4 hours of cognitive testing for my son and 4 hours on the waiting room couch for me, we were excited to leave.
“Can we visit that house?” my son asked, pointing toward a mansion hidden among the trees.
I glanced at the clock. “Another time. We should get home.”
Moments later, a red sports car struck us from behind, cracking against my bumper like an egg against a mixing bowl.
