Food in the bunker was getting scarce. Everything was rationed carefully.

Many families had reached a breaking point. An emergency meeting was called. Only elders were allowed to attend.

The next morning, the parents were gone. Word was they went up for supplies. An older teen announced they’d found a hoard of frozen beef topside.

Jimmy’s curiosity got the best of him. He discovered the “beef” in the freezer looked more like human remains. Jimmy found his mother’s bloodied coat in a pile of discarded clothing.

Her words from the night before now made sense. “Someday, you’ll understand our sacrifice.”
