What Was She Doing Out That Night?
RWDrabble 2.0.079 | Flicker
Today’s random word is flicker; the twist is to write a double drabble (200 words) and to begin with a designated first line.
Because drabbles are short, please consider staying on this page for at least 30 seconds so your time counts as a read. And while you’re here, a clap, highlight, comment, or all of them is greatly appreciated. It lets me know you were here.
We are all completely beside ourselves with hope. Yesterday, Sara stared blankly into space; today, she blinks in rhythm with the tunes we sing. For the first time in weeks, we see a flicker of promise. The hospital bed we’ve despised now holds a body ready to heal.
Nobody knows what Sara was doing behind the wheel of a car that night. She had no driver’s license or insurance, but the paramedics assured me she was alone at the crash scene. The whole situation made no sense. When my daughter comes out of her coma, she’ll be grounded for life.
“You don’t mean that, Aunt Judy,” my niece laughed, adding a hint of gaiety to a room filled with stifled air.
“Oh, but I do. She could have killed herself or someone else. She had no business driving — none.”
