Before ItoroObong left home that day, she plopped to the cold cement floor, chin supported by her hands. She was weighed down by thoughts that were now like a heavy rock in her soul.
Leaving would mean not seeing her family for a long time. And if life continued its cruelty, as she had come to know it, she might not see them forever. After all, death, like a thief, doesn’t announce its time of appearance.
But were they really family? She asked herself as she thought of her father, who chose to buy her stepmother a new car instead of paying for her school fees.
She thought of her stepsisters who laughed at her anytime she was sent back home from school.
They had never known the anguish that came with being singled out every term, not as a recipient of awards but as a target of scathing censure.
