I owe my life to Denny’s. There are only a few options for students to go for a complete fix of hearty bacon and scrambled eggs, followed by much-needed coffee after pulling hours of intensive study.

Tonight, it’s three a.m. and I’m waiting for John Mulligan. As a study buddy, he’s the best — brilliant and focused — but as a date, only time will tell. He suggested we meet too late to wash my hair or apply anything other than a dab of sweet cherry-flavoured lip gloss, but after a night of scrutinizing how planets orbit the universe, I’m convinced I have little to lose.

Nothing prepared me for what happened next. John walked in with Felicity, the “It” girl, hanging off his arm. His tousled hair, undone shirt button, and visible hickey on his neck were suspicious.
