“C’mon, Sis! How many people get to explore a haunted mansion marking the eve of their mother’s death? Mom could be here.”

“And I could be a monkey’s uncle. Why do you want to see her, anyway? It’s not as if we were on the best of terms. You puzzle me.”

“Exactly my point. Mom was tortured. Her twisted mind wedged a rift between us, so we’d lean on her, instead of each other. We’re here because I want to break free of her angst.”

“She can’t hurt us anymore. You know that, right?”

“Maybe, but Cloe, I hear things. Every night, after closing my eyes, I feel a soft breeze brushing my cheek and the sound of a slamming door. I’ve begun burning frankincense and hanging crystals, but…
