The Story of a No Code Girl Among Coders

It was one of those foggy nights in November. The air was thick. The night was so quiet you could hear the soft rain droplets as they landed gently on the window. You were feeling drowsy, very much due to the silence and the book you had been reading that now sat opened on your lap.

You were frightened by the sudden loud crushing sound of hoofs coming from outside. Getting up, you made your way to the window. You were able to make out the silhouette of a horse in the dark night and hear indistinct sounds. Something was moving in your direction, maybe attracted by the light from your window.

A harsh knock on the door.

— Who is it? you asked.
— The software is not working! The software is not working!

You decided to open the door. This night was getting too boring, and you could use some entertainment. As you opened the door, a strange smallish hooded figure was standing in front of you. This figure was barefoot.

A hobbit? What is a hobbit doing this far away from the Shire?

— What is the matter, lad?
— The software is not working!! The software! I can’t make it work…!!

Clearly this hobbit was using some kind of coded communication.

— Fear not young hobbit, I will show you the way to Mordor.
— Mordor?! I need to fix the software!!
— So to reach Mordor, you take the A5 ramp…
— What ramp? I need to fix the software!
— … and take the third exit towards…
— Please listen to me! I need to fix the software!
— … the software? Oh, dude I can’t help you with that!

[Awkward silence]

Well so clearly this is not the story of how I ended up among coders.

The true story is actually quite common.

I went through the classic job interview process.

With an English literature background, plus over 9 years of experience as a technical translator and technical writer, what really made me be among coders was my genuine thirst for knowledge and the challenge this represents.

In this new challenge I work alongside amazing people. The stuff they know is stuff I don’t know much about. So we meet half-way (kinda).

They talk about coding, platforms, JavaScript and CSS. And I do my very best to make sense of it all.

My job description is an interesting plethora of things. I have recently been described as a content hunter. That fits. I also call myself a content polisher. I write, I edit, I help out, I give feedback. Mostly throughout the day — and because I am in a highly creative space — I have a lot of ideas. And this right here is one of those ideas.

The story of how a literature girl goes about her day in a software company. Stay tuned!
