Sophie led Yousef into the dungeon. Each footstep produced an ominous echo, but as they descended, a light appeared below. At the foot of the stairs, they found a stone corridor illuminated by torch brackets. The flicker of the flames continued for several yards to a chamber at the end.

‘Looks like this place expects you,’ said Yousef.

Sophie advanced, clutching her sword handle. She had a feeling something unpleasant was about to leap out and attack. The entrance to the dark chamber drew closer, filling her mind with horrors. Their echoing footsteps seemed louder than ever, and as they reached the threshold, they halted.

A second later, light flooded from the chamber beyond. Peering inside, Sophie beheld a room brightly illuminated by firelight filled with large mirrors at either side of a central path. After a brief exchange of confused glances with Yousef, Sophie ventured forward, gingerly making her way along the path between…
