Over the past four weeks, I’ve been showcasing the opening chapters of my newly released fantasy novel Ravenseed. An epic tale of love, lust, betrayal, and vengeance, it is mostly set in the Dark Ages, with a parallel plot in the present.

Chapter 4: Raven Inn

At the time, it would have been impossible to see how the addition of Tom Praeten to our party could have meant any more than one extra companion at the end of a weary day’s journey. We had made relatively good time, despite monk-related delays and suchlike, but we were now cold and damp. The thought of warmth, hot food, ale, and a bed for the night seemed like heavenly luxury.

We reached The Raven Inn as the sun set. I had not visited before, and found the large, three-storey stone building a welcome sight. A stable lay next to the inn, alongside a blacksmith. An orange glow from the forge…
