It took a while for the police to finish up their investigation of the bank robbery. It seemed like hours until they were released from the scene. It was as if Ari was walking in a cloud. It took everything to keep herself together.

“I don’t think you should drive home, Ari,” Gretta said.

“I called an Uber,” Ari said, grabbing her purse. Her nerves couldn’t handle anymore.

“I can call Zach for you,” she offered.

“No!” Ari protested, a little too quickly. The last thing she wanted was her boyfriend see her fall apart. “It’s fine, Gretta. Please.”

“I’ll wait with you until it arrives then,” she relented.

The cool night felt good on Ari’s face. The Uber arrived shortly, and Ari said her goodbyes, ignoring the worry in her friend’s gaze.

“Where too?” the driver asked, and Ari gave him her address. He was an older black man with kind eyes. He didn’t talk much, which was a relief. She closed her eyes, taking in slow steady breaths to help control the anxiety she felt. Before she knew it, the car jolted to a stop in front of Ari’s apartments.
