“If it’s Islands in the Stream I’m gonna lose it,” Jenni told Hanna. “Kenny Rogers looks like somebody’s Santa.”

“What?” Hanna was blow-drying her hair while talking on the phone which didn’t even seem safe.

All Night Long is number three,” Jenni yelled over the dryer’s whir. “There’s only two more to go.”

“What?” Paige Pearson appeared in the kitchen doorway, her cookie plate empty.

Jenni was letting Paige and Polly stay up to watch The Love Boat. It was the Saturday before Halloween and Paige was in her costume, a Strawberry Shortcake dress. It wasn’t a plastic sheath, their mother had actually made it.

Mrs. Pearson was that mom but she paid Jenni to babysit better than anyone else in the neighborhood and the twins were pretty easy too.

“Nothing.” Jenni grabbed the tray of Toll House by the radio and slid the remaining cookies on her plate.

“Can we pleeease stay up for Fantasy Island?” Paige cocked her head and flashed the dimple that she didn’t share with her sister.

“No way. Too scary. I probably should have said no to Love Boat. Be grateful.”

Always looking for the interesting. Incurably curious. Write a new book in my head once a month. Hopefully one will cross the finish line before I'm 80.
