Pushing the door wide open with her knee, Kelsey Westbrook pressed through with purse and three plastic bags of groceries from the local market wrapped around her fingers. “I’m home,” she said aloud. Of course there was no response. There never was. She had read that in 1848, a German, Gustav Fechner, proposed that plant growth could benefit from being talked to. So, she talked to her eclectic collection of potted greenery. They were her friends.

Kelsey quickly changed out of the conservative office attire required by her position as the only para-legal at one of the city’s small law firms. The job alternated between challenging and boring, but paid well. Mostly it consisted of legal research for cases the two-person partnership was working on. But, in many ways each assignment was like a treasure hunt. The mission, to research legal citations and precedents that would support the case at hand and the reward, hopefully see justice done. She knew she was good at her job and the partners often told her so. But now it was Friday and she wanted to have some fun.

Groceries put away in the compact but efficient kitchen; she poured herself a glass of Pinot Gris and plopped down into one of the two chairs at the small bistro table between the kitchen and living areas of the apartment. She…
