My Red Car

My red car takes me where I need to go,
even though
I’d rather stay home.

My red car,
let’s call him Mars,
is all fire, passion and desire.
My secret weapon for taking over the world
one poem at a time.

When I turned 40,
lordy, lordy,
I was given a plastic red car.
They said look at her;
She’ll go far.
Then they fired me.

My red car
safely speeds across two states
to where my loving family waits
to welcome me and give thanks.
I say “don’t bother me,
I have to pee.”

Thank you, red car,
for cool, cool air,
on muggy southern highways
so there’s no excuse
for not visiting more often.
