Designing interactions with the Moon (part 2)

Last year Fieldwork Facility was commissioned to create a series of experiential projects to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing.

This week we are sharing three of our favorite concepts from the project.
To catch you up… we received an open brief to think about the moon through the lenses of transformation, wonder, and health.

Concept 2: Echoes of a Moonwalk

Echoes of a Moonwalk is an installation that encourages a close and physical connection with the moon. The installation brings the moon a little closer and transforms the moon's surface into a place that any of us can walk on and even play on.

One small step

The project works as an intervention in the public realm which allows people to see themselves walking on the moon. A live-feed camera is placed directly above the pavement and feeds any motion live onto the moon’s surface (a projected circular screen). So, when you move, you’re moving on the moon… When you walk, your moonwalking on the lunar surface.

The concept could work in different scales… The installation could literally scale up in size and ambition for a bigger public space the moon could be much grander in size encouraging people to interact and play on the moon in different ways.

Did you just see that?

Occasionally to spark interaction we proposed to create fun animations across the moon's surface that interact with people in the public space… for example, an astronaut floats over the moon echoing movements under the camera. Or a moon worm pops out of a crater, a UFO fly's past, and buzzes around… when a person approaches it whizzes away.

The moonshot

‘Echoes of a Moonwalk’ was designed for people to physically interact with the moon… For one night only (on the anniversary of the moon landing) we proposed our moon situated in a prominent public space could host an extra special performance to inspire and awe and wonder around how the moon affects our movements.

We proposed to collaborate with the exquisite Wayne McGregor Company to create a performance in front of our special moon. The Choreography will explore our bodies connection to the moon.
