You can find Julius on Twitter @JuliusKoroll.

He helps people create better apps and websites at Desiign a studio based in Germany. They operate under the mantra: Caffeine for pixels.

They’re doing some amazing things over in their studio, they’ve worked with the likes of Lidl and more recently Vapiano. We’re super excited to see some of their new designs emerge over the next year. In April they were also looking for a new UI/UX designer, so get in touch if you’re interested in their opportunity.

We’re delighted to feature Julius this week and pick this design orientated brain. We hope you enjoy this interview.

What got you into design originally? My family is all about design and art.

My father works in the advertisement-industry and got me into brands and drawing at a very early age. I think that guided me a lot in the direction of product-thinking and helps me a lot in my daily work. Instead of screens I try to see the whole picture and the people in front of the screen. Dribbble and pixelperfect stuff is great but this is just the tip of the iceberg. Good design starts way deeper and I love to dig around in problems and solve them.

What advice would you have for someone getting into design today?

Do your own thing. I know, cheesy right?

But it’s important to see what other people do and get the basics and learn but after a while you need to get away from the crowd and do your own crappy shit. And then it gets nicer, and then even a little nice and suddenly you started a new design-trend. People think of themselves like they are theJony Ive of Design but instead of creating like their icons did they copy exactly what their icons do. The difference is tremendous.

Always try things; just a few people do, so the playground is fairly empty and you have a lot to play with!

Do you prefer designing for desktop or mobile? and why?

I love desktop and webdesign because of the possibilities and craft I can use for producing good webdesign. All the colors, typography, layout, freedom! I love it. But mostly websites are just flyers with buttons on them: They sell stuff. With mobile you have real products and you can enhance peoples lifes instead of distracting them from it. I think I would go for webdesign right now :-)

Finally Does desiign have any projects we should be looking out for in the near future?

Oh yes, a lot! We recently launched the redesign for the Vapiano In-Store Apps for whole Europe (exciting!) and are redesigning the App for the Sonos contender Bluesound by NAD right now which is amazing since we’re huge audiophiles and their products are just crazy good. So a lot of stuff is coming!
