Home repairing is a basic requirement everyone has to take care of irrespective of whether one lives in an apartment, a townhouse or a detached house. Having a basic a set of tools will help in avoiding high bills from professional technicians, as well as help in gaining knowledge of home repair. These toolkits can be classified into three types: the must-have toolkits, good to have and luxury for remodels and more ambitious repairs.

The must-have tools for any DIY enthusiast

Initially, the home repair tools can be purchased with a small investment and include a screwdriver set, a tape measure, hammer, an adjustable wrench and a set of pliers. Such a tool set can be used to tighten hinges, replace cabinet fixtures, hang pictures, replace a faucet, etc.

A pair of high-quality screwdrivers will serve well for many years as they are the ideal tools to install light switches or tighten cabinet hardware. It is advisable to purchase a higher quality tape measure like a screwdriver set and can be used to measure anything from the wall area to the thickness of lumber.

Coming to hammers, a smooth-faced claw hammer, which is a good mix of versatility and heft for driving nails into the walls and other fixtures, should be chosen. The curved claw helps in pulling out nails, and it is recommended to choose one with a wrapped or cushioned handle to reduce vibrations and fatigue.

An adjustable wrench is needed to tighten and assemble all sorts of fixtures whereas pliers can be used to slice wiring, straighten bent power chord plugs and get a good grip on things one wants to fix.

The good-to-have tools for more serious DIY

These include utility knife, flashlight, cordless drill, a manual saw set, and a basic painting set. These are useful in putting up shelves, changing door locks, painting a room, etc.

A utility knife comes in use for a number of things like opening boxes, sharpening pencils, marking mortises and shaving wood. It is better to choose one with a built-in blade storage. For a flashlight, It is better to go for a rechargeable one than those that use a battery as chances of running out of power are high.

Cordless drills are frequently used during home repair. A saw set is an integral part of the toolkit. Hacksaws and wood saws perform different functions. The hacksaw cuts metal but not wood whereas a wood saw efficiently cuts wood.

Luxury tools that every guy wants to have

This set of tools should be purchased if one is thinking of some serious home remodelling and these include Allen wrenches, a combination square, a pipe wrench, a staple gun, and a rubber mallet.

How to keep the tools organized

Durable storage systems are available to organize the set of tools efficiently. They are designed in a way to allow easy access while keeping the tools clean and free of damage. A permanent storage location should be chosen to keep the large tools that are used infrequently and a portable storage system is needed to store smaller tools. Choosing the right kind of tools is the first step towards having a DIY home-repair system.
