With a little bit of effort, dedication, and time, you can make yourself a beautiful storage space that can adorn any room in your house.

Do-It-Yourself projects have quite a few advantages

Most of the time, people tend to forgo the possibility of DIY — which is the shortened version of “Do It Yourself” — when they want to improve their homes. The practice of crafting your own products — in this case, a shelf — can incur inconveniences such as the fair amount of time that DIY projects normally consume, the absence of any kind of warranty, and the possibility of unexpected damages resulting from a lack of experience. However, many forget that working on a home improvement project does have quite a few advantages that will surely overshadow potential drawbacks.

First of all, an obvious benefit would be cost-effectiveness. If you are willing to throw some time into the making of your shelf, you will be able to save up some money instead. Furthermore, working with your hands and your brain will broaden and improve your transferable skills, all while making you appreciate your work once it is completed. Finally, for a shelf, as for anything else, customization possibilities are endless. Sure, you could stick to the basics, but there is so much more you can do when you are working on your very own project. So by all means, do give a chance to DIY.

The few things that you will need to build your shelf are readily available

For your DIY shelf, you will obviously need some essential raw materials, as well as basic equipment. But fear not, as all of what you will require is either already lying around your house, or available at a nearby supermarket, grocery store, or hardware store.

Here is a list of everything the shelf will require

  • A flat drill for wood
  • A foldable graduated ruler
  • Two wooden boards of size 65 cm x 18.5 cm each
  • A drill
  • A fishing line
  • Sandpaper
  • Transparent spray lacquer
  • A thick rope of 2–3 meters

Building this shelf makes DIY look easy

Just as gathering the things required for the project at hand is extremely easy, assembling the shelf will not be too harsh on you. In fact, with the comprehensive guide found below, working on this home improvement project might even turn into a blissful experience that will encourage you to do more DIY in the future.

Steps to create your homemade shelf

  • Step 1 — Mark a dot on each corner of the boards, 3 cm away from the edges.
  • Step 2 — Use the drill to perforate the boards, referring to the marked dots for guidance. Then, use the flat drill to dig through the holes completely.
  • Step 3 — Use sandpaper to polish the surfaces of the boards and apply a layer of transparent spray lacquer.
  • Step 4 — Cut the rope into 2 and fold each of the resulting ropes into halves. With the help of the fishing line, forms hooks to hold the shelf.
  • Step 5 — Finally, form knots to tie your hooks around the holes drilled into the wooden boards.
  • Step 6 — Enjoy your great shelf!
