New York Fashion Week: Hot off the Runway, Straight Onto Paper
Fashion Week landed in New York City recently, showcasing upcoming trends for next spring. Some creators took Fashion Week designs beyond the runway and onto Paper. Here are a few of our favorites:
Fashion illustrator Danielle Meder is known for live-sketching the runway, which she often does using Paper. This season, Danielle tapped into Paper’s sketching and photo features on the iPhone. At the Tanya Taylor and Degen shows, she says: “I took snapshots and then played with extending the background scenery into the foreground using the drawing tools (hanging streamers at TT, clouds and rainbows at Degen’s My Little Pony-inspired collection) to highlight the designer’s vision.”

For the Mara Hoffman Spring 2016 collection, designer Naarah Han drew inspiration from nature and Americana motifs. Using Paper’s Fill tool, she sketched leaves that were used as outlines for intricate embroidery. Naarah says, “Paper is the perfect medium, literally and figuratively, between analog and digital illustration. You can achieve the beauty and intention of hand-drawn work with the clean finish that technology facilitates. I used the Fill tool to map out and cut away negative space. It’s fluid, like modernised finger painting. After I drew the leaves in Paper, I collaged them in Photoshop to compose the final artwork for each look.”

A longtime fan of Paper, Janelle Sing leads design at Soludos, a popular shoe brand known for their espadrilles and summery shoes. With Paper on iPhone, she’s able to quickly show fit corrections on shoe samples — something she used to do manually. “When I have to show the factory technicians where (the shoes) are not fitting correctly, I can now draw directly on the image or make notes on it and send it off as an image or PDF.”
