How Climate Change is good for your business
by Tim Thonhauser-Röhrich
“Every crisis instigates an entrepreneurship boom.”, says Gerard Grech, CEO at TechNation and member of the World Economic Forum, in our new book FightBack Now. “A whole new generation of entrepreneurs will emerge from this unfortunate humanitarian and economic crisis.”
Existential threats can be a driver of change. Nevertheless, Linda Hill, Professor at Harvard Business School recently told us, that “many people start by asking me ‘Do you think innovation matters now?’“.
Clearly, not everyone is seeing the great opportunities that the current Covid-19 and climate crisis offer.
However, the chances are manyfold: for example, Investors are increasingly looking for sustainability projects to invest in. Anna Alex, Co-Founder of Planetly shares her experience with finding investors: “Interestingly, the three main funds that Planetly took on board are not typical impact investors or subject-matter focused investors.”
Another aspect is, introducing sustainability measures in your company can also trigger employees’ creativity as they have to think in new ways. Steven Tebbe, managing director of CDP Europe, promotes the importance of climate data: “There are very clear, very tangible business benefits in terms of companies understanding where they are, where their risks and opportunities are and benchmarking themselves.”
These are just some examples to stimulate your creative sustainable thinking, contributed by the experts from our network. Furthermore, I collected a number of articles for you to put a spotlight on how to measure sustainability in your company, how investing in nature can be a benefit for your business and what mistakes to avoid when transforming into a more sustainable business.
To execute on those opportunities, Nicolas Brusson, Co-Founder and CEO of BlaBlaCar, only sees one option: “We need to harness the ingenuity of tech entrepreneurs to solve pressing global issues.”
