One of the first things you must do when developing a product or a service is determining the target. It is crucial for your business to know clearly who is your customer because without knowing it you are speaking to everyone and to no-one, firing everywhere and nowhere.

Here are 4 ways that will help you structure your target

1. Determine the problem you solve

Your product or service has to be the answer to a consumers problem, the key benefit has to be clear and differentiable. Describe hoe your product or service helps your customer, how it adds value to its hobbies, work, desires, way of living, etc.

2. State your demographic

Objective data such as:

  • Age
  • Gender
  • Location
  • Income
  • Spending patterns
  • Education

Always keep in mind your business plan as it is the referral point that guides your strategy and tactics. You will soon see that everything starts to come together and line up in a single “business voice”.

3. Build a psychographic profile

This information is more in depth and gives you an idea of a person’s psyche.

  • Hobbies
  • Behaviors
  • Lifestyle
  • Interests

4. Create an ideal customer

Based on demographic and psychographic information you have collected, create an imaginary ideal customer of your product or service. It should embody everything you relate to and find positive in the market.

In our case we used this 4 steps to developed what we call a “beta target” which means that we determined a target previous of the market research.

Our final target will be the output of testing this beta target and making a market research to obtain primary data and refine and describe properly who our final customer will be like.
