Film Courage: And I’m wondering about fear of success? Because I know that this is something people think they don’t have, but [actually succeeding] is a huge thing [people fear]. Everything around you would then change. People would treat you differently. Maybe people would be fearful of you or envious of you?
Marc Zicree: Yes…it’s terrible to have a lot of money.
Film Courage: …Or live in a gated community! [laughs] I know it would be terrible!
Elaine Zicree: Part of it is the mythos of a golden door. Here I am, you know. I have bad thoughts that are with my Mom and I’m not a very good enough person. But if I go through the golden door, everything will be changed and wonderful and I’ll wake up with my hair in order and it’s all going to be great. It’s this fear of this great transition and something that you can’t come up to or people will be waiting for you to fall. And there are people who (from envy), wait for you to fall. But if you don’t see life as this [makes a roller coaster motion with hands], you know that you will always fall on your face but just that you are who you are, just struggling on a slow uphill battle. There will always be downs, but you can always fight your way back up. I think some of that fear is that of what the publicity machines create, which is an unrealistic vision of who you are when you write well…like you are suddenly a celebrity….(Watch the rest of this thought-provoking answer here on Youtube).
