First Impressions When Reading A Screenplay by David Wappel
Film Courage: We recently published a video that talked about 99% of screenplays are rejected after the first scene by most script readers. As someone who is now starting to read scripts and has done this in the past interning, what are your thoughts on this?
David Wappel, Screenwriter: I think why most scripts get rejected after the first scene is because by the first page you can tell if someone is a good writer or not. If it’s not going to carry you through there is usually not a strong enough reason to continue. Even if there is a great story underneath it, there is just too much else out there that is a good story and has the writing to back it up. It’s not that there isn’t something great in there it’s just that that script is not at the level yet…(Watch the video interview on Youtube here).
