Film Courage: What makes a beautiful shot?

Andy Rydzewski, Cinematographer: What makes a beautiful shot? Well beautiful is a tricky word. I don’t even know how I would begin to answer that because a beautiful shot…well you know there is a basic thing to me — backlit, something that is backlit. If the light is behind coming through that’s always a good place to start but beauty is such a strange word because there at least for my work (working in long-form narrative) I think beauty is all relative to the stories so it’s really what my translation I suppose of that question would lean me toward what fits a scene? If the emotion of the scene is loneliness the word beauty is going to be interpreted differently. What’s a beautiful way to shoot loneliness? Or a beautiful way of shooting madness? So is beauty actually beauty or is it…I think it’s all relative to the story or the intention of a moment or a scene and so there are spots where ugly is beauty…(Watch the video interview on Youtube here).
