Film Courage: You’ve said that numerous people have reached out to you since our interview (about a year and a half ago) and I’d love to hear about all of the emails you’ve received. But one in particular which we were just talking about [off camera] was the moral issue of transmedia. I’m probably not describing it correctly, can you tell us more?

Houston Howard, Instructor/Transmedia Author/Speaker: This is a real common question that I get from people “is transmedia immoral?”

And the first time someone asked me that I thought I was…I didn’t really understand what they were saying. Digging in with these people that have these questions, it’s sort of rooted in is this capitalistic exploitation of the audience? Is this manipulation of the audience? Are you taking advantage of people in a bad way? Is this just a big cash grab that you don’t really care about the people, you just care about taking the money? And there are all these issues that people have with it.

My typical answer is that like anything transmedia can be used in an immortal way, of course. It depends on who the creator is. It depends on what their intentions are and what they are trying to do. There are people out there just trying to use it as a cash grab. Are they just capitalistic jerks that are just trying to take advantage of opportunities and of course just like regular film producers…(Watch the video interview on Youtube here).
