Film Review: Samaritan

Sylvester Stallone brings a new cinematic hero to the screens. Is Samaritan fit to stand by Rocky and Rambo?

Slyvester Stallone has brought to movie screens possibly the greatest sports character in Rocky Balboa. He has also brought John Rambo, one of the most known action heroes. So obviously, at some point, the actor/writer/director would have to dabble in the current phenomenon known as the superhero film.

Directed by Julius Avery and based on the comic of the same name by Bragi F. Schut (who also wrote the film), Marc Olivent & Renzo Podesta, SAMARITAN is a story taking place in the fictional Granite City. The opening credits is narrated by thirteen-year-old Sam Cleary, played by Javon Walton. He tells the backstory of Samaritan and Nemesis, twin brothers who become the hero and villains of the city. An explosion at the city’s power plant during a battle kills both of them, and the citizens are left wondering if their hero is still alive somewhere.

We fast forward to the present. Sam is doing what he can to help his mother out with the finances, even if that means joining up with a gang leader named Cyrus, who steals Nemesis’ weapons and names himself as the new bad guy in Granite City. Sam meets Joe, a garbage collector who most certainly possesses strength beyond what someone…
